The first confirmed outbreak of Dog Flu infection occurred in Florida at
a Greyhound racing facility in 2003.2 Since that time, the incidence of Dog Flu infection has increased, and outbreaks have been reported in dog - racing facilities, dog shows, dog parks, shelters, kennels, veterinary offices, and pet stores in many US states.1,4 - 8
Arizona's one remaining
Greyhound racing facility, Tuscon Greyhound Park, has been granted permission by the Arizona Racing Commission to shut down by the end of June, provided a number of other conditions are met.

racing, which has been occurring at the
facility since 1944, when
racing was legal for just 60 days per year.

Many of these
greyhounds have been successfully placed with families with small children even though most of them have just come from a
racing facility and are not used to little ones crawling around or walking up to them.
First discovered as a cause of severe respiratory illness in a group of
racing greyhounds in 2004, dog flu continues to be a threat to primarily groups of dogs held in close quarters, such as in breeding
facilities, shelters, pet stores, et cetera.
