A multidisciplinary
group of scientists from the Sanders - Brown Center
on Aging at the University of Kentucky have identified an interesting connection between the health of the brain tissue that supports cognitive functioning and the presence of
dementia in adults with Down syndrome.
Kales and her colleagues Laura N. Gitlin, Ph.D. and Constantine G. Lyketsos, M.D. from Johns Hopkins University authored the new paper
on behalf of a
group of experts, called the Detroit Expert Panel
on the Assessment and Management of the Neuropsychiatric Symptoms of
Dementia, who developed the DICE approach.
They also work with the family caregivers of those with
dementia on implementing caregiver stress prevention strategies such as attending monthly support
groups, creating crisis plans, taking regular weekly time off from caregiving tasks, and enhancing their self - management and problem solving capacity related to their loved one's
dementia symptoms.
RAND's latest
dementia research, which builds
on earlier work, included interviews with key representatives of national, state and local stakeholder
groups.
In a Policy View published in The Lancet Neurology journal, a
group of leading experts
on the epidemiology of
dementia state that the number of people with
dementia — both new cases and total numbers with the disease — in some Western European countries is stabilising despite population aging, in direct contrast to the «
dementia epidemic» reported in some recent studies.
Based
on a review of previous studies a
group of researchers have shortlisted a number of environmental risk factors for
dementia in a paper published in the journal BMC Geriatrics.
Forty - five percent of women in this
group went
on to develop
dementia within four decades.

A hundred and twenty sedentary older individuals not having
dementia were randomly put in 1 of 2
groups, individuals who started an exercise program of walking
on a track for forty minutes each day, 3 days per week, or individuals restricted to stretching and toning exercises.
Interestingly, the
group of volunteers who did experience
dementia weighed about eight pounds less
on average at the beginning of the study than those who did not develop
dementia.
Participants all suffered from memory loss (though not
on dementia levels) and were split into two
groups.
In one large study published in 1996, German researchers tested Ginkgo extract
on a
group of 222 patients, aged fifty - five or older, who were diagnosed with mild to moderate
dementia caused by either Alzheimer's disease or multi-infarct
dementia.

on topics related to behavioural problems in
dementia to improve their knowledge and skills.
Patients in the family intervention
group had better functioning
on activities of daily living than patients in the 2 control
groups, but did not differ for cognitive function, depression, psychotic symptoms, behavioural disturbances, or overall severity of
dementia.
