How many
romances show us a story without an
HEA (that's Happily Ever After for those who haven't darkened the door of a
romance writing conference lately)?
Once I started writing, I found (for the type of
romance I read and write) that they always get their
HEA, or at least an
HEA for now.
This still makes me laugh, but I never realized
romance stories HAD to end in an
HEA.
Without the
HEA, it isn't a
romance.
For example, in any type of
romance fiction, the
HEA (Happily Ever After) is pretty much non-negotiable — if your
romance doesn't end in a
HEA, you'd better be able to generate those emotions in other ways, otherwise readers will avoid your stories, and you've wasted time writing them.
When she's not daydreaming about her next travel adventure, and perhaps her own
HEA, she is usually immersed in a
romance novel.
And if you sell realistic women's fiction as
romance, readers who don't get their
HEA ending will be unhappy forever after.
As a
romance reader, I want my heartfelt
romance and
HEA as much as the next girl, but I prefer mine on the side of snark, thank you very much.
Self - styled literary readers don't read books that wind up, as every
romance does, with a happily - ever - after (an
HEA, in the language of the genre).

If there's no
HEA, then in my book, it's not a
romance.

HEA), mystery (crime, investigation, unmasking the criminal), etc. — that's certainly part of the expectation, but in every genre there are even smaller expectations that we must fulfill to give our readers a good reading experience.
