The human leukocyte antigen (
HLA) system is a
gene family that encodes the human major histocompatibility
complex (MHC).
Due to extensive linkage disequilibrium and multiple polymorphic candidate
genes in the
HLA complex, identifying the alleles responsible for these associations has proven difficult.
In 2002, two groups identified a particular
gene variant in the major histocompatibility
complex (MHC), called
HLA - B * 5701, as being the key factor in hypersensitivity to abacavir.
Within the essential immune loci of the major histocompatibility
complex, we find
HLA - B to be the most polymorphic
gene on chromosome 6 and in the human genome.
