Diets Hypoallergenic Hydrolyzed Protein Canned Dog Food is a veterinary - prescribed
diet.
If your vet suspects such allergies, she will recommend a
hypoallergenic diet for your pooch containing
hydrolyzed protein.
If your veterinarian suspects food allergies, he or she may recommend a food trial with a prescription
hypoallergenic novel
protein diet or
hydrolyzed diet.
There are two types of
hypoallergenic diets, those that have limited ingredients that your dog has not been exposed to such as venison, lamb, or duck with potatoes and rice or those that have a
hydrolyzed protein source that is so small that the immune system can not recognize it and cause an allergic reaction.
These patients may benefit from
diets containing
hydrolyzed protein sources in which the molecular weight of the polypeptide molecule is below 18,000 daltons (Royal Canin
Hypoallergenic formula) or from home - cooked
diets containing single novel
protein and carbohydrate sources.
Proposed causes for human IBD include defective immunoregulation of the gut - associated lymphoid tissue that may be precipitated by permeability defects, 14 infectious and parasitic agents, 15,16 and dietary allergies.13, 17 There is provocative evidence from clinical observations and animal models to incriminate normal luminal bacteria or bacterial products in the initiation and perpetuation of canine IBD.18, 19 The clinical response to
hypoallergenic or elimination
diets suggest that dietary factors may influence the pathogenesis of canine IBD.8 - 11 The term «
hypoallergenic» refers to a
diet that is generally free of additives and preservatives, and contains a
hydrolyzed protein source.
In some IBD cases, changing the
diet to a
hypoallergenic hydrolyzed protein source
diet (Hill's feline z / d), or to a single novel
protein source
diet such as duck, rabbit or venison (Hill's feline d / d), or to a multiple novel
protein source
diet such as turkey, venison lamb and fish (Totally Ferret turkey, venison, lamb formula) will control the food allergy problem and control the IBD.
A case report of three German Shepherd Dogs with EPI demonstrated that a
diet with 19 percent fat (on a dry matter basis) was well tolerated and resulted in weight gain, decreased diarrhea, and an improved coat (the
diet used
hydrolyzed protein, which is processed in such a way as to render the
proteins nearly
hypoallergenic).
There are two technologies upon which
hypoallergenic diets are based: novel
protein, novel carbohydrate formulas and
hydrolyzed protein formulas.
Hypoallergenic diets contain
protein sources that have been broken down (
hydrolyzed) into smaller molecules that are much less likely to produce an immune reaction than larger intact
protein molecules.
Alternatively, use one of the
hypoallergenic cat
diets in which antigenic particles have been destroyed (
hydrolyzed protein) such as HA, z / d etc..
Trifexis contains some
hydrolyzed soy and is flavored with artificial beef from a pork - based
protein.1 The amount of
hydrolyzed soy in Trifexis is comparable to the amount of the
hydrolyzed soy in
hypoallergenic diets.1 If your dog is allergic to soy or pork, you may consider talking to your veterinarian about whether other heartworm, intestinal parasite or flea protection products may be more appropriate for your dog.
