Having determined that it is feasible to construct such an index, the second stage of the work by the ABS will examine the feasibility of sub-dividing the index according to broad functional lines to produce a habitat index (reflecting disadvantage relating to health, housing and infrastructure) and an economic index (reflecting disadvantage relating to education, training and employment), as well as sub-dividing the index along geographical lines to produce an urban and rural / remote index.

Conclusion: Although health care system personnel may prefer to measure PSC with a survey instrument that assesses a variety of workplace environment measures, these findings suggest that use of nonvalidated work environment indices will not provide accurate assessment of PSC in a pharmacy department.

This global index has four subscales: two items pertaining to difficulties related to child care and combining work and family life; 23 items pertaining to child somatic health and illnesses; seven items tapping handicaps of the child; and 15 items tapping the child's behaviour and adjustment to family life.

Nevertheless, the Practice Environment Scale — Nursing Work Index (PES — NWI) seems to be one of the most promising instruments because of its appropriateness (content validity), its structure, which has a rather good fit (construct validity), its ability to discriminate magnet hospitals like other NWI derivates (discriminant validity), and it has also been associated in cross-sectional studies with health outcomes, especially nurses» self - assessed mental health but also with patients» health outcomes objectively assessed (concurrent validity).
