At just one frontier, it has a standard model that describes particles,
Higgs field theory, the search for the Higgs boson and the Large Hadron Collider.

The
Higgs boson is postulated as that which, through its interaction with the «
Higgs field», gives mass to particles such as electrons and quarks which are basic to standardphysical
theory.
According to the most accurate scientific
theory ever created — known as the standard model — all of space is filled with a mysterious stuff called the
Higgs field.
Although the
field itself would not be detectable, the
theory also predicted the existence of a new particle that would be: the
Higgs boson.
In their paper, «
Higgs Seesaw Mechanism as a Source for Dark Energy,» Krauss and Dent explore how a possible small coupling between the
Higgs particle, and possible new particles likely to be associated with what is conventionally called the Grand Unified Scale — a scale perhaps 16 orders of magnitude smaller than the size of a proton, at which the three known non-gravitational forces in nature might converge into a single
theory — could result in the existence of another background
field in nature in addition to the
Higgs field, which would contribute an energy density to empty space of precisely the correct scale to correspond to the observed energy density.
However, their
theory required a totally new quantum
field which should be manifested by a new and special kind of particle, the
Higgs particle.
In the
theory I developed in 1967 — Abdus Salam developed essentially the same
theory, independently, in 1968 — a symmetry - breaking
field played a fundamental role, manifest in a particle called the
Higgs boson, whose properties we predicted, except for its mass.
In July 2012, physicists at CERN scored the
field's crowning achievement by discovering the
Higgs boson, the particle key to explaining how other fundamental particles get their mass and the last missing piece in a 40 - year - old
theory called the standard model.
According to
theory, slamming protons together at enormous speed should produce a piece of the
Higgs field — a
Higgs particle, in fact.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in physics today to theorists Peter
Higgs and Francois Englert to recognize their work developing the
theory of what is now known as the
Higgs field, which gives elementary particles mass.
