One of the most exciting debuts of the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is that of the new BMW 3.0 CSL
Hommage R Concept.
And yet every time we think BMW has lost its way, we're presented with something like the 3.0 CSL
Hommage R, unveiled during the week of classic car festivities in Monterey, California, and pictured here in the same livery as the 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL racing car it's sitting next to in pit lane.
The long - awaited redesign of the flagship 7 Series sedan made its debut, as did the 3.0 CSL Hommage concept, first in electric yellow - green at Villa d'Este in Italy, then in BMW's classic white, red, and blue racing livery as
the Hommage R at Pebble.
While the original concept was displayed in a striking yellow, echoing one of the road - going colour schemes of the period, the latest concept — dubbed the 3.0 CSL
Hommage R — wears white paintwork and BMW Motorsport stripes, echoing that IMSA car of 1975.
Similarity to the modern BMW M2 is no coincidence, as that's what the 2002
Hommage is based upon, but detail changes give the concept its own style.
The 2015
Hommage was modeled after the most extreme CSL, which combined plenty of extra lips and ducts with more wings than a Tiger Moth.
Crafted from lightweight carbon fibre, the 3.0 CSL
Hommage is believed to be based on the M4 and uses a six - cylinder in - line engine with eBoost.
BMW claims
the Hommage is one of the lowest cars it has ever produced, a result of the carbon fibre front splitter closing the gap between the road and the front end.
And the sheer self - confidence and sporting prowess of the BMW 3.0 CSL
Hommage are perfectly summed up in the original colour of its spiritual predecessor — Golf Yellow.
Yet both artists point to a productively tenuous life, a shifting between presence and absence: The penetrating, stained, vertical blue hues of
Hommage are reminiscent of the capacity of Untitled (Beginning) to surround and invade the body.

be too costly to build and turn a profit.
The CSL featured lots of aluminum to reduce weight, but 40 years later carbon fiber
is the material of choice for the
Hommage.
«This model
is not earmarked for production,» says Adrian van Hooydonk, grandmaster of the group's drawing board, about the CSL
Hommage, his latest creation.
As a result, the
Hommage weighs a substantial 200 kg less than the original 3.0 CS (the car the homologation special CSL
was developed from).
The design study
is scheduled to make its full public debut at the Concoso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este show in Italy this weekend, a venue where BMW has a history of revealing awesome concepts (last year, the automaker offered up the slick 2002
Hommage Concept).
The BMW 3.0 CSL
Hommage's body
is framed by air deflectors, powerful wheel arches and a prominent roof and rear spoiler.
The design of the
Hommage has
been heavily influenced by aerodynamics, but retains enough classic styling cues from the legendary racer with which it shares a name.
Where the cabin of the old 3.0 CSL
was trimmed in wood, the
Hommage uses only a decorative strip of wood on the instrument panel; the rest
is constructed entirely out of carbon fibre.
Although the
Hommage vehicles BMW has produced for the Concorso d'Eleganza over the years don't normally make it to production, the company said: «Our
Hommage cars not only demonstrate how proud we
are of our heritage, but also how important the past can
be in determining the future.»
But more than that, the BMW 2002
Hommage represents a clear statement of how pure driving pleasure
is defined in 2016.
The CSL — it stands for Coupe Sport Leichtbau, lightweight sport coupe —
Hommage has
been widely panned as, well, ugly by a lot of the automotive press.
