TOKYO, Aug 28 (Reuters)-
Honda Motor Co is recalling about 63,200
vehicles due to a defect in driver - side air bags made by Takata Corp, the latest in a series of air bag recalls across the industry that have
affected nearly 16 million
vehicles to date.
Based on similar circumstances involving
vehicle manufacturer recalls, our assessment is that
Honda's liability should not materially
affect its shareholders.
The group chose to look at two different
vehicles — an open wheeled Penske - Reynard -
Honda racing car and an Audi TT road car — to compare how different car shapes and characteristics would
affect their gravity - defying capabilities.
Honda, so far, accounts for a bulk of the recall with over 2.8 million
vehicles affected, including model - year 2001 - 2007 Accord
vehicles, 2002 - 2006 CR - V crossovers, and 2002 - 2004
Honda Odyssey minivans.
Other automakers
affected by defective Takata airbags include Chevrolet, who issued a stop - sale of 2013 - 14 Chevrolet Cruze models last month;
Honda, who recalled more than 2 million
vehicles in the U.S.; Nissan, who recalled approximately 228,000
vehicles; Mazda, who recalled approximately 34,000 cars in high - humidity states; and Toyota, who recalled 844,277 models with Takata airbags earlier this year.
While GM hopes to target owners of Toyota and Lexus
vehicles affected by the current rash of recalls, Ford's program is open to any owner of a Toyota, Lexus, Scion,
Honda, and Acura
vehicle, so long as it was manufactured in or after 1995.
Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an
affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer for repair as soon as they receive mailed notification of this recall from
Honda.

Honda Civic
vehicles manufactured from January 16, 2014 through November 6, 2014 and 2015
Honda Fit
vehicles manufactured from March 12, 2014 through May 12, 2015.
Customers can check if their cars are
affected by the recall by submitting their
vehicle identification number (VIN) on
Honda's website.
As part of a global recall campaign announced in June 2014,
Honda will be replacing the passenger side airbag inflator on the
affected vehicles.
Correction: Odyssey owners should be notified by mail (if their
vehicle is
affected) with specific instruction for having the shorting pin terminal replaced at the local
Honda dealership, free of charge.
Honda said the number of
vehicles affected has yet to be determined; a call to the automaker for clarification was not immediately returned.
But a larger footprint can negatively
affect drivability and overall
vehicle dynamics, so
Honda was keen to address these potential pitfalls.
Correction:
Honda will notify owners with specific instructions for locating qualified dealers that will replace the driver side frontal air bag inflator in all
affected vehicles, free of charge.
The
affected vehicles all contain
Honda's optional all - wheel drive, and feature build dates between April 1 and August 11, 2016.
The latter increase
affects all of
Honda's currently on sale
vehicles.
The recall, which is a part of
Honda's globally on - going precautionary recall campaign, concerning Takata front airbag inflators, will
affect over 1.9 lakh
vehicles of previous generation of Accord, CR - V, Civic, City and Jazz.
Honda is announcing this recall to encourage all owners of these
vehicles to take their
vehicle to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification from
Honda that their
vehicle is
affected.

vehicles so far includes brands and models like the 2015 Kia Optima, the 2016
Honda Civic and Chevrolet Camaro 2SS, as well as the 2017 Ford Fusion, Ford F - 250, Kia Sorento, Volvo XC90, and Mitsubishi ASX.
