Amid all this talk of energy demand, the
IEA also emphasises another of its estimates: 1.4 billion people across the world lack any
access to
electricity and 2.7 billion still use wood or other biomass to cook.
The foundations for this departure from orthodoxy have been laid by the International Energy Agency (
IEA), which has essentially admitted in a series of energy
access papers that the majority of those without
electricity today will never be wired to the grid (PDF).

This third edition of the report, a multi-agency effort led by the International Energy Agency (

electricity and clean cooking, doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030
