A crucial change for the 2017
IIHS awards is the addition of a new headlight
criteria that dictates that only vehicles with «acceptable» or «good» headlight visibility may qualify for the highest honors.
Under the
IIHS ratings program, a front crash prevention system with autobrake is one of the
criteria required to earn a Top Safety Pick +
award.
IIHS is using new
criteria for the
awards this year.
IIHS has been
awarding Top Safety Pick since the 2006 model year and has tightened
criteria twice before this year.
The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (
IIHS) announced earlier this year that it would include a new passenger - side crash test as part of its
criteria for the coveted Top Safety Pick +
award.
To highlight acceptable to good performance in the new crash
criterion of small overlap, the
IIHS has up rated its Top Safety Pick
award by adding on a plus sign (+).
Toyota also pointed out that the Prius v has previously been
awarded an
IIHS Top Safety Pick — which accounts for many
criteria except small overlap.
This marks the fourth time that
IIHS has strengthened
criteria for the plus
award.
