The story is
set in the aftermath of World War II and follows a journalist Juliet Ashton (James) who decides to write about the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a
book club formed on Guernsey Island during wartime.
Even if this weren't clear, the very first scene establishes a world of comic -
book exaggeration and formal abstraction; it's
set in a raucous
club ablaze with syncopated strobe lights and the announcement «Welcome to Hell.»
In particular, funding and advice has been offered to help schools
set up
book clubs and establish stronger links with their local library, as a way to promote library membership among pupils.
When
book club members ask me questions about the
settings, characters and special objects
in Blood Orange and Black Current, I know their interest is piqued.
It would be a challenge for half a dozen
books to give a balanced representation of a single country, let alone the 14 countries of continental Eastern Africa *, but we hope that these six
books set in Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Zimbabwe (listed
in approximate geographical order, north to south) will give you and your
book club a small taste of the region and, perhaps, spark a thirst to learn more.

set in the American heartland.
During the hour - long interview, Stockett also took questions from
book clubs in Ohio and Washington D.C. via Skype, and
in a separate segment (without Stockett) Couric interviewed three women from Jackson, Mississippi — the
setting of the novel.
