If you are self publishing and
want to be able to sell via retail, one way or another you will have to pay for an
ISBN number and distribution.
Additional fees may be incurred for the purchase of an
ISBN number with Bowker (for US Customers), account set up with Ingram Spark ($ 49 per setup or change) and for the purchase of your book proof and any book copies you
want to use for marketing and sales purposes (costs vary per book but generally $ 4 - $ 6 + shipping).

ISBN, LCCN, trim size,
number of pages, publisher, and publication date for customers who
want to know more about your book.

want the widget to appear on your site, and you're in business!

ISBN number, you are assured of getting exactly the book you need or
want FAST!

want to know when by book becomes successful can I go with another publisher so that the book can get into schools and libraries with a new
ISBN number?
Kobo
wants indie authors who publish via Kobo Writing Life to buy
ISBN numbers.
Amazon, Target and other retailers have added AR functionality to their smartphone apps, but nobody
wants to be holding their phone up and scanning
ISBN numbers or QR codes.
First, most vendors will not
want to create and manage their own
ISBN's or tracking
numbers, as already are far too many individual SKU's to track today.
If you
want a unique one that designates you as the publisher, you will need to purchase an
ISBN number separately, and you will need one for each version of your book: eBook, paperback, hardcover, audio, etc..
In your About the Book page, you'll
want to offer up all the metadata you can on your book (including pricing,
number of pages,
ISBN # s, etc.) And you'll also
want links to all the major retailers carrying your book (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Nook, Kindle, Kobo, etc..)
This is fine for self - publishers but larger publishers will
want to use
ISBNs linked to their own
number range and publisher identifier.

If you
want to sell physical books directly yourself, you can still do this with bulk discount orders from CreateSpace, or separate local print runs (technically requires having your own
ISBN number, not a CS - assigned one).
The Nielsen application form asks for the binding type of the publication you
want to buy the
isbn numbers for.
If you
want to self - publish your book, be listed as publisher, and own the rights to the book, you should buy an
ISBN number from Bowker.
Which is where I realised I needed an
ISBN number — the international system of book identification, which isn't essential for an ebook but if you
want to get it listed in publishing databases, sell it on Apple, get it into as many ebook stores as possible, it a basic requirement.
If this is not what you
want, as a publisher you can get your own
ISBN number.
That will make the distributor the publisher of record (as in, their name will show up in the publisher slot on most retail sites); also, you're not supposed to use the
ISBN except on sites to which the aggregator distributes, but you'll
want to use the same ID
number for the ebook everywhere it's for sale.
Numbers can not be transferred, so if you got a free one and later
want to show your name as the publisher, you will have to re-publish your book using a new
ISBN.

ISBN number.
To list your book for sale, simply enter the
ISBN number, choose the price you
want to sell it for (Amazon also shows you the current lowest prices for New and Used Books, so you can easily undercut the competition), and specify how you are willing to ship.
