Thomas Dane Gallery presents an exhibition of new works by Venezuelan - born artist Arturo Herrera, whose practice combines found images and objects with drawing, collage, sculpture and paint.

Upon entering the exhibition, the viewer passes through a threshold of a floor to ceiling installation of paint, images and process and into a gallery of walls painted bands of the color spectrum that dissolves to white.

The works on view at Eleven Rivington have long since distanced themselves from this beginning, having appeared in an artist book, then haphazardly rearticulated through three - color process paintings (cyan, yellow, and magenta), scanned and digitally distributed on his and others tumblr pages, and presently re-photographed through a PDF generating application on his phone, the images from which provide the basis for this exhibition.

This resplendent monograph, which accompanies the exhibition yet is intended to endure long beyond it, reveals both the overt themes and the more ambiguous substructures of Otero's oeuvre to date, from his early still lifes and famous «skins» — paintings made of fragments and scraps of oil paint culled from previously painted images — to his more recent «transfers» and innovative sculptural work in porcelain and steel or iron.

They include Kelley Walker's exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum, right next door to the Pulitzer, which displayed sexualized pictures of black women and historical images of police brutality against black people; Dana Schutz showed a painting of Emmett Till's mutilated body in the current Whitney Biennial.

The exhibition, the artist's first solo show of paintings in New York in six years, continues to reveal Taaffe as a philosopher of painting, offering compelling meditations on art and culture, both contemporary and historical, and visual ruminations on the interrelated families of forms and images in art, architecture, and archaeology.

A survey of Wiley's career since 2001, this exhibition features 60 paintings and sculptures (a more recent pursuit) that riff on images from the art historical canon, challenging accepted notions of race, gender and representation.

The exhibition surveys the artist's decade - long examination of the aesthetics of emotion with a selection of mixed - media paintings and one moving - image work.

This exhibition of Paul Cézanne's images of his most frequently portrayed model, his wife, Hortense Fiquet (1850 — 1922), includes 24 of the 29 known paintings of her, three watercolors, fourteen drawings, and three sketchbooks.

Both the exhibition and the catalogue focus on Richter's paintings of the 1960s that are based on photographical source images.

Ian and Mary, 1971, by the late American painter Alice Neel, is one of a handful of images in the exhibition painted directly from life, yet in her spare, urgent paintings Neel, who famously stated «I don't do realism» always alerts us to pictorial shifts and disjunctions that trigger psychological readings beyond the painted surface.

For many artists in the exhibition, the radical language of modernist painting developed during the early twentieth century - of collapsing and expanding picture planes responding to the frenetic pace and fragmentary encounters of modern life - continues to evolve as distortions and mutations of the image take on new permutations with each technological advance.

For a 2014 exhibition at the Albertina, the late, precocious Austrian artist Gunter Damisch shipped a stack of precut wood panels from Vienna to Paris, leaving the Woolworth studio team to compose the final images as they pleased in a mix of collage, monotype, woodcut, drawing and painting.

In this exhibition Corbett vs. Dempsey presents a group of brand new paintings, including images of Groucho Marx and South Park Kenny, as well as a startling new batch of painting collages, a new facet of her oeuvre.

Highlights of the exhibition include Stark's pre-YouTube Cat Videos (1999 — 2002); the playful, provocative and psychedelic «chorus girl» collages from the series A Torment of Follies (2008); My Best Thing (2011), a video that debuted at the 2011 Venice Biennale edited from Stark's cyber exchanges with two online paramours; the celebrated video installation Bobby Jesus's Alma Mater b / w Reading the Book of David and / or Paying Attention Is Free (2013), set to a West Coast gangsta rap soundtrack and featuring images that range from Renaissance paintings, to family snapshots, to portraits of hip hop legends.

More generally, the chapters of «America Is Hard to See» pay homage to a number of those seminal exhibitions through which the Whitney has historically recognised and advocated for emerging American art: «Anti-Illusion: Procedure / Materials» (1969), for instance, with its defiant presentation of the post-minimalism of Richard Tuttle and others, or «New Image Painting» (1979), which celebrated a revival of figurative painting in an artistic climate dominated by conceptuPainting» (1979), which celebrated a revival of figurative painting in an artistic climate dominated by conceptupainting in an artistic climate dominated by conceptual work.

How are the status and meaning of an artwork — whether an Ancient Greek statue, a digital photograph, or a painting by an itinerant portraitist — altered through the creation of facsimiles, through exhibition, or through the conversion of the object into image or code?

Like many of their previous collaborations, the exhibition will experiment with the intersection of photography, painting, and sculpture focusing on the shifting cultural significance of ideas, objects and images.

The exhibition will present selections from Bayrle's most iconic series, including several of his rarely exhibited «painted machines» — hand - painted kinetic works inspired by images of Chinese pageants and other mass demonstrations.

He organized award - winning exhibitions and publications including solo presentations by Lynda Benglis, Judith Godwin, Jane Hammond, Joseph Marioni, Rashaad Newsome, Chuck Ramirez, and Sandy Skoglund, among other artists, as well as American Art Since 1945: In a New Light; New Image Sculpture; Andy Warhol: Fame and Misfortune; Beauty Reigns: A Baroque Sensibility in Recent Painting; Made in Germany: Contemporary Art from the Rubell Family Collection; Telling Tales: Contemporary Narrative Photography, and Something to Say: The McNay Presents 100 Years of African American Art.

At a time when we are immersed in a cacophony of media images and sounds, and live in a climate of anxiety often provoked by invisible and abstract adversaries, the four fundamental expressive art forms — painting, sculpture, installation and performance — are amalgamated over the course of the exhibition, with contributions from Philippe Parreno, Adel Abdessemed, Roni Horn, David Hammons, Mark Grotjahn, Marlene Dumas and many more.
