working to improving civic life in Los Angeles, from serving as deputy mayor to

immigrant students through his support of DACA, and bridging philanthropy with the needs of LAUSD students.
The damaging legacy of bigotry that flows into the lives of
immigrants and into American public education is one that both immigration reform
advocates and the school reform movement are
working to overcome.
Prior to
working at APEN, Vivian spent seven years
advocating for statewide policy, legislation, and budget funding for
immigrants, communities of color, migrant farmworkers, and women.
The National Immigration Project provides legal assistance and technical support to
immigrant communities, legal practitioners, and
advocates working to advance the rights of non-citizens.
Prior to law school Zara was a front - line community
advocate for over a decade,
working extensively on issues involving violence against women and children, anti-racism,
immigrant and refugee issues, legal aid reform, custody and access advocacy, anti-poverty initiatives and specific coalition
work with South Asian women.
