In a small gallery on the second floor of the Petersen museum in Los Angeles there's a collection of Gurney's cars.
Nevertheless Robert Motherwell; Early Collages, which runs through January 5, is well worth seeing and these works, placed today
in a small gallery on the Lower East Side, in the guise of having just come out of the studio of some young artist, would appear completely viable and credible as contemporary works because there are so many artists today, here in New York showing on the LES and Bushwick as well as elsewhere in the United States and Canada and perhaps globally, still working in the orbit of the aesthetic consensus of post-War formalism.
The projects, about four per year, are presented
in a small gallery on the third floor of the California Museum of Photography at UCR ARTSblock.

There are some caveats: the attempts to cover
smaller works
on paper and allied photography are too bitty, the rather arbitrary mixed selection of later works
in the last
gallery confusing, although even here there is a bonus
in a four - panel burst of dappled blues and yellows by the underrated Joan Mitchell.
On view
in the
gallery at 502 West 22nd Street is a painting called Ru Ware Project, 2007 - 2012, made up of nine
small panels painted
in different shades of pale blues.
If painting as a practice is viewed with far more skepticism today, the sense of conversation evoked by the works
on this wall — and
in a
smaller room off the main
gallery, which is also filled with the art of Schloss's friends and acquaintances — rings eerily familiar.

on display at
Gallery Joe, are
small and precise experiments with color.
At Celadon
Gallery in Bridgehampton, the celebration of William King continues with a
small retrospective of his ceramics,

galleries — and perhaps discovering new talent — collectors are focusing
on market - tested trophy works carried by major dealers; are sometimes buying from Instagram or other online images without seeing the work
