The roots of yoga
practice reach back to
Indian as - cetics, who sought enlightenment through esoteric
physical practices, mater - ial renunciation, and meditation.
In the early
Indian source texts of the Nâţh yogis and of Hatha Yoga, we find a
physical practice mainly relying on static exercise with a comparatively small number of exercises.
The preconditions to do so were good since the basic ideas of the European turner movement and the
Indian Hatha Yoga seem surprisingly similar with both aiming to transform the mind by way of
physical practice.
