In 2012 — 2013, 42 % of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population aged 15 years or older were
daily smokers — 2.6 times the age - standardised prevalence among other Australians.19 Australian governments aimed to halve the
Indigenous Australian smoking rate by 2018 (from the 2009 baseline) through a range of
Indigenous tobacco control initiatives.20 Funded by the Australian Government in support of these national initiatives, the TATS project was conducted mainly through Aboriginal community - controlled health services (ACCHSs).
