This flies in the face of their belief in
individual selfish action as the root of all good.
And to some extent it's true — the wisdom of markets driven by
individual selfish action is a real thing.
But that does not mean that there is no such thing as a public good, or a public commons that can be damaged through that same
individual selfish action.
Individual selfish action, the natural «market», sees absolutely no direct negative consequence.

Historical figures from the Muslim world were often known for their noble
actions and decency and fostering intercultural exchange and education... but sadly politicoes and power hungry
selfish individuals have created a perverted image of the religion and its peoples by purporting that their
actions are supported by Islam when in fact they are not.
Furthermore, it also relies on an unrealistic approach to human
actions;
individuals listen to their
selfish interests as much as they heed their altruistic motives, and even more so regarding impersonal political matters.
Now this may seem odd as a foundational belief — «public goods» are rather universally understood in economics, and the «tragedy of the commons» and related game - theory discussions of, for example, the archetypal «Prisoner's Dilemma», show quite clearly that there are situations where cooperative
action produces a better outcome for all than seeking
individual selfish advantage.
Not every problem is local... not every solution is
individual... not every
action is
selfish... not all planning is short - sighted.
