UC Riverside researchers find a way to use
the infrared region of the sun's spectrum to make solar cells more efficient
They found that open oceans are much less efficient than sea ice when it comes to emitting in the far -
infrared region of the spectrum, a previously unknown phenomenon that is likely contributing to the warming of the polar climate.
We have previously discussed
the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum in terms of the wavelength of the light that is involved, 2.5 - 15 m -LRB-(4000 - 650 cm - 1)(Figure 3).
The sun, which is quite hot (about 5800K), emits most of its energy at between 0.2 microns and 4 microns (solar or short wave radiation, or plain sunlight), while the Earth's surface emits the most energy at wavelengths between 5 and 50 microns (the so - called thermal
Infrared region of the spectrum).
These star systems are the M - dwarfs, which are small, cool stars such as red dwarfs that emit most of their light towards the red and
infrared region of the spectrum.
If laser light with a wavelength 1064 nanometres — which is in
the infrared region of the spectrum — is shone on a crystal of the material, some of the light emerges as green light with a wavelength of precisely 532 nanometres.
The researchers» work demonstrated the benefits of their novel technique by inkjet printing devices that take advantage of the properties of black phosphorus, not least its semiconducting bandgap that can be readily varied by engineering the number of atomic layers and can cover the visible and near -
infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
NESSI will be able to see a wide range of wavelengths in the near -
infrared region of the light spectrum.
The researchers report in Nano Letters that by combining inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals with organic molecules, they have succeeded in «upconverting» photons in the visible and near -
infrared regions of the solar spectrum.
Not exact matches
The researchers used functional near -
infrared spectroscopy, a technology that measures oxygenation in
regions of the brain using light, to assess the babies» brain activity.
Now, new observations
of a particular wavelength
of infrared light from that galaxy betrays the presence
of oxygen atoms that have two electrons missing (in the smaller
region depicted in green), researchers report online today in Science.
Activity in the PFC
region of the mens» brains was measured throughout the test using a unique neuroimaging technique called functional near
infrared spectroscopy or fNIRS.
Space - based
infrared telescopes like WISE allow astronomers to see past the hot, bright stars that dominate visible - light images and probe the subtle, cold
regions of gas and dust where stars are born.
Suzanne Smrekar
of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, and colleagues found signs
of relatively recent volcanism by measuring the
infrared «glow»
of solidified lava in three
regions in its southern hemisphere.
These surface phonon polaritons are analogous to electron oscillations in metals or doped - semiconductors, called plasmons, but offer the benefit
of low losses and operation in the
infrared to terahertz spectral
regions.
In all that time, they have failed to pin down exactly what that world's surface is made
of, in large part because the key wavelengths
of light they need for definitive detections are in the
infrared, a
region of the spectrum mostly blocked by Earth's atmosphere.
More crucial,
infrared rays penetrate effectively through dust clouds, making it possible to peer into otherwise obscured
regions of space.
By observing
infrared light, which is less affected by cosmic dust than visible light, and exploiting the excellent conditions at ESO's Paranal Observatory, the team was able to get a clearer view
of this
region than ever before.
They located galaxies in ultra-deep field Hubble photographs — in visible light and
infrared —
of the same
region of sky and pinpointed where those galaxies ought to be in the Chandra image.
Briony Horgan and Jim Bell
of Arizona State University in Tempe analysed near -
infrared spectra
of the
regions, gathered by the Mars Express orbiter.
Padilla hopes to use engineered materials to investigate what he calls «the last unexplored
region of the electromagnetic spectrum» — the T - ray, or terahertz,
region — positioned between the
infrared and microwave bands, at a frequency
of a trillion cycles a second.
The
infrared radiation from these
regions revealed copious amounts
of micrometer - sized crystalline grains.
Between January 2003 and November 2011, researchers made more than 40 observations
of Jupiter's moon Io at near -
infrared wavelengths, shown above at right and the
region of Io where they took place, outlined in white at left.

In the second paper, physicist Dejan Vinković
of the University
of Split in Croatia developed a model that shows how a combination
of stellar wind and
infrared radiation from the inner disk can blow the ultrafine crystallized silicate particles billions
of kilometers from the inner
regions of a protoplanetary disk to its colder outer sections, where comets and other cold but rocky objects, such as Pluto, can form.
In February and March
of 2012, Condon and his colleagues studied a
region of sky that previously had been observed by the original, pre-upgrade, VLA, and by the Spitzer space telescope, which observes
infrared light.
Only the central
region of the filter can transmit visible light, while the outer portion can only transmit the near -
infrared light used for fluorescent imaging.
NIRSIT is a device based on the near -
infrared spectroscopy principle, which (a) utilizes light to detect hemodynamic changes in the cerebral blood flow and (b) visualizes brain activation
regions in the prefrontal area
of the brain in real time.
Wide Field Camera 3 can capture a spectrum
of the near -
infrared region where the signature for water appears.
Now, Dmitry Kalashnikov at A * STAR Data Storage Institute and his co-workers have hit on a way to overcome this problem and realize the best
of both worlds — using visible light to perform measurements in the
infrared region.
However, some bacteria can push the boundaries
of the energy used to wavelengths well in the near -
infrared region.
«I've been making
infrared observations
of star - forming
regions for more than 25 years,» says Stephen Strom
of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson, Arizona, «and the images coming back are utterly incredible.»
Infrared observations
of this
region show volatile ices including N2 and CO..
Using high - speed cameras to analyze a narrow wavelength band in the near -
infrared region, the sensors search for changes in the tops
of clouds, which indicate lightning strikes.
«Because
of the advancement
of sensors beyond the visible
region, we need new, high - performing obscurants in the
infrared region,» Zach Zander says.
Increasingly, sensors can now go beyond the visible range into the
infrared (IR)
region of the spectrum.
ALMA focuses on the
region of the spectrum between radio waves and
infrared light, the range
of frequencies at which complex molecules emit light when they undergo various transitions.
Scan from the
region of visible light towards the longer wavelengths
of the electromagnetic spectrum and you'll find, sandwiched between microwaves and the
infrared, a type
of radiation that we have previously had little time for: terahertz rays, or T - rays.
Such a shortfall is particularly prominent in luminous
infrared galaxies (LIRGs), which have high star formation (and thus CCSN) rates and host bright and crowded nuclear
regions, where large extinctions and reduced search detection efficiency likely lead to a significant fraction
of CCSNe remaining undiscovered.
Overall, just a handful
of HH jets have been spotted in this
region in visible light, and about the same number in the
infrared.
We present the first results
of project SUNBIRD (Supernovae UNmasked By
InfraRed Detection), where we aim to uncover CCSNe that otherwise would remain hidden in the complex nuclear
regions of LIRGs, and in this way improve the constraints on the fraction that is missed by optical seeing - limited surveys.

of 64 12 - meter - diameter dish antennas comprising a single imaging telescope to study the universe at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths — the
