of anthropomorphic forms alludes to the type
of gatherings that have taken place in various public spaces across the world in recent times, demonstrations
of clashing values about political
views and social space and
other politicized issues.
The videos and
installations of Lynn Hershman Leeson, which went on
view last weekend at Bridget Donahue gallery in New York, are painful things... Hershman's work isn't always easy to take, but it certainly makes most
of the

view in New York seem so light that it's barely there.

of artist talks and panel discussions, artist biographies, images
of artworks presented,
installation views of the exhibition at the three venues where it appeared, and all eight essays published in the now - out -
of - print exhibition catalog (at right), among
other material.
The free weekend event and artist - run initiative brings together the art world private
view into the public space with a series
of screenings, live performances and
installations from the likes
of Larry Achiampong, Cory Arcangel, Benedict Drew, Joey Holder, Hannah Black, and Rachel Maclean, among

The exhibition (above, an
installation view) covers
other, more intimate responses, including a series
of small self - portraits that mostly feature a goofy, slightly Jules Feifferish face applied to images
of other artworks or artists; a few sculptures, among them «Socialist Pizza,» which involves a Ray's Pizza box, two
of Picasso's hefty 1930s beach maenads and a hammer and sickle; and a work using a photograph by Hans Haacke.

True to the effect
of Neff's earlier
installations, A Prologue proffers an uncanny phenomenon
of viewing: the main gallery acts as a literal reflection
of itself — a section
of wall is mirrored in a photomural across the room, while
other photographs depict Neff's poetic images posed here in the gallery space or in her Philadelphia studio.

In conjunction with Ira Sachs» short film Last Address, an elegiac tribute to New York City artists who died
of AIDS, a window
installation honoring many
of the artists in the film — including Keith Haring, Peter Hujar, Ron Vawter, Jim Lyons, Cookie Mueller, Charles Ludlam, Ethyl Eichelberger, and
others — will be on
view until Friday, October 8 at NYU's Kimmel Center, at the corner
of West.
Atlas's
other works on
view, Painting by Numbers and Plato's Alley, also deal in a retro - futuristic aesthetic familiar not only from the Wachowski Brothers» blockbusters but also from the work
of artists like Ryoji Ikeda, whose video
installation The Transfinite took over the Park Avenue Armory in similar style last spring.
Throughout the wall structure, various slots and openings allow us to glimpse
other spaces within the
installation, and to relate one object to another from various points
of view.
And if Merz's imagery is at the same time a hortus conclusus and an infinite sky that burns, so the exhibition at Met seems to look with one eye at the chaotic and creative intimacy
of her house - atelier in Turin (on
view too few photographs bear witness to the relationship between her art and domestic environment, which is by contrast well documented in the catalogue) and with the

Not many art appreciators were there to block my
view of Rob Pruitt's hilarious
installation: big fancy abstract paintings twinkling with the artist's signature glitter, innertube objets encrusted with more sparkly «action painting,» and (literally) heavy - duty floor pieces composed entirely
of cement - filled jeans (Levi's, Sasson, brands from every price point): Five stuffed pairs «sitting up» created a starfish; a snakelike lineup
of several more doing splits straddled the floor like a team
of torso - free cheerleaders; denim couples, oozing cement cellulite, spooned, mounted each
other, and / or tempted one to sit on them like furniture.
