Gastro
Intestinal Stasis This is a term for when a rabbit's digestive system shuts down.
As bunnies will ingest their fur while they groom themselves, this can cause problems and can clog up their insides causing a condition known as gastro
intestinal stasis.
Gastro -
Intestinal Stasis Because of their complex digestive systems, rabbits can contract this if they become stressed, ingest fur or some other foreign body, have toothache, react badly to antibiotics, or develop gas or indigestion problems.
When rabbits do not eat well and a veterinarian can palpate a large, doughy mass in the stomach, it is because there is
intestinal stasis, not because there is a hairball.
Many causes of
intestinal stasis in rabbits exist, but the No. 1 cause is an inappropriate diet.
Predisposing conditions usually can not be identified, although it remains important to rule out causes of
intestinal stasis, such as neoplasia and intussusception.
In people, SIBO is usually associated with
intestinal stasis (blind loop syndrome).
