Fitbit OS 2.0 fixes a lot of what made
the Ionic feel half - baked, and while this is really what Fitbit should have come out of the gate with five months ago, I'm more than glad it's finally here.
A very slippery 0.24 coefficient of drag helps a lot with that, and a six - speed dual clutch automatic transmission helps
Ionic feel much livelier than the average hybrid.
The Ionic feels more like a fitness tracker with just enough smartwatch features to justify calling itself one, but doesn't have the full functionality we've come to expect from the category.
By contrast to the constant charging required by my Apple Watch, the 6 - 7 days of battery life I get with
the Ionic feels practically hedonistic.
The Ionic feels just as good to wear, but its design pales in comparison when placed next to the Versa.
If
the Ionic feels too rich for your blood, and the Blaze too old or unimaginative, Fitbit has a new «mass appeal» smartwatch in the pipeline, reportedly named Versa.
In many ways,
the Ionic feels like an evolution of the existing Fitbit product lineup.
Not exact matches
Given that there are millions of
ionic liquids, scientists
feel confident that they will find another candidate with a better freezing - point profile.
I would lightly curl the top layer with an
ionic / ceramic curling iron to eliminate frizz and give hair texture, without the coarse look or
feel.
For most companies, the
Ionic would have
felt like a disappointment.
But right now, as a smartwatch, I can't help but
feel the
Ionic is more of a tentative step forward than a grand leap into the fray.
While we haven't yet tested all these functions on the Versa, the look and
feel of the interface is close to
Ionic, so we have a good idea of what the experience will be like.
Little tweaks like swiping down from the watch face to access your notifications make the software
feel more polished (the
Ionic made you swipe up from the bottom for some reason).
After a few moments with the
Ionic on my wrist, I could tell Fitbit put a lot of work into making the device
feel every bit as high end as you'd want it to.
Ionic's look doesn't reflect how it
feels, though.
Ionic still
feels very new — there aren't many apps, and the OS could be slicker — but it's still a very good fitness tracker, and will no doubt improve with subsequent software updates and new apps.
The changeup, available in three colors (burnt orange, black, or silver), gives the
Ionic a much more premium
feel over the Surge and Blaze, which it replaces.
While its feature set isn't quite on par with that of its bigger brother the
Ionic, the Fitbit Versa
feels like the same watch but with a lighter and friendlier design and a much lower price point.
I miss most of the notifications as I barely
feel the
Ionic vibrate on my wrist.
The Fitbit
Ionic is a comfortable fit on your wrist, and compared to a lot of modern smartwatches is particularly light — so much so that you'll instantly notice how lightweight this
feels on your wrist, which makes it a more pleasant to wear while working out than, say, the LG Watch Sport.
There's no way I would've worn the
Ionic out on the town, and most of the time, I
feel like my Apple Watch detracts from a nice dress, too.
The strong & glamorous grip of these Fitbit
Ionic Stainless Steel Bands around your wrist makes you
feel more cool and confident.
Fitbit Coach is gaining the ability to rate your workouts and edit which ones are on your Versa /
Ionic, the Today app will offer health insights and reminders to drink more water, take more steps to complete a challenge, etc., and the whole user experience of FitbitOS 2.0
feels smoother, more polished, and is what should have been on the
Ionic from day one.
The $ 300 Fitbit
Ionic still
feels a tad pricey, also lacking the robust app support of some of its rivals, though its first OS update is pretty hefty.
But it's finally starting to
feel like the Fitbit
Ionic is living up to what it was intended to be in the first place.
But it's also a relief: The ability to swap in new watch faces from a far larger collection makes it
feel like the
Ionic finally has a personality.
What I'm most excited about, however, is the fact that Fitbit OS 2.0
felt so smooth on the Versa compared to Fitbit OS on the
Ionic.
Consumer Reports applauded the new look of the Fitbit Versa, which it said was «light without
feeling chintzy,» especially compared to the «clunky and cheap» look of the Fitbit
Ionic.
From a comfort perspective, the
Ionic's included watch band is constructed of the same type of elastomer found in several other fitness bands and smartwatches, allowing it to avoid
feeling like an obtrusive accessory.
Even when we worked up a proper sweat — be it from running, hiking, or otherwise working out — the
Ionic never
felt uncomfortable on our wrist or impeded our activity.
Whether you've gone for the
Ionic, Flex 2 or Alta HR, we all want something that
feels a bit more personal, especially after dropping the sort of money most wearables cost.
I couldn't tell how it
feels with different bands, but the whole watch is a lot more low - key than the
Ionic, in a good way.
The touchscreen
felt a little more responsive, too: The
Ionic's sluggish interface was one of its downsides.
If you are one of the holdouts using Windows 10 Mobile you should
feel more secure if you plan to buy the Fitbit
Ionic this fall.
The
Ionic always
felt slow and janky when interacting with it any way, but that's not the case with Versa.
Its smart features are far better than Fitbit
Ionic, but getting it all to function
feels like a serious project.»
The price is already lower than the now cheaper
Ionic, and while it doesn't
feel as premium we enjoy the smaller design that sits closely to your wrist.
The
Ionic we saw wasn't final software so we weren't able to get a good
feel for the interface, though the exercise workouts available seemed similar to what is offered on the Blaze suggesting the interface will be familiar to current Fitbit users and easy to navigate for newbies.
I certainly wouldn't advise writing long emails on the Sport, but being able to send off a quick reply to incoming messages without having to pick up your phone helps this
feel a lot more like a proper smartwatch than the
Ionic.
There will be three
Ionic colours available from the box, but Fitbit is also offering two leather straps that are super soft and
feel lovely, as well as three perforated sports straps that allow for breathability, all of which can be bought separately to give your
Ionic a different look.
I've had a few days to try out the
Ionic, and while the software isn't quite finished yet, I found myself with some mixed
feelings about the device.
But after spending two weeks with the
Ionic, I still
feel comfortable recommending the $ 299 fitness wearable to a particular subset of people, as long as those people know beforehand what they're getting themselves into.
