The IFTA Awards are the highlight of Ireland's
film and
drama calendar and they celebrate the very best of
Irish screen talent across
film and television.
The event was hosted by Chief Executive of the
Irish Film and Television Academy, Áine Moriarty, who congratulated all winners and nominees working in the
Irish film and
drama industry.
Monday also saw two
Irish films screen: Urszula Antoniak's Nothing Personal, a soulful
drama about immigration set in Connemara, and The Beholder, Conor Horgan's documentary about three
Irish portrait painters.
Fans of the Oscar - winning 2006
Irish film Once (and its more recent stage - musical adaptation) may find this American
drama a little derivative, but it's a strong story in its own right.
The first
film is New Line's The Kitchen, according to Variety, a
drama based on a cult comic - book series about a group of
Irish Mafia wives in 1970s New York.
The lyrical lad of
film - making, in the form of
Irish writer - director John Carney (who gave us the wonderfully musical
drama in 2007's «Once»), is at it again as he brings the continued inspiration of music and motivation in the engagingly festive coming - of - age musical melodrama Sing Street.

Irish animated fantasy «Song of the Sea»; Three of the Best
Films also get nominations for Best Director; Lenny Abrahamson for «Frank»; Gerard Barrett «Glassland» and Terry McMahon for «Patrick's Day», with John Carney also in that category for the musical
drama «Begin Again».
This year the IFB supported twelve
Irish feature
films, six creative feature co-productions, seventeen feature documentaries, two TV
dramas and eight animated projects.
