ISLAND — Mayor Bill de Blasio set a special election for Nov. 3 to fill the
City Council seat vacated by Vincent Ignizio, according to a proclamation filed on Monday.
The
seat was vacant following Joseph Borelli's (R) election to the Staten
Island City Council in November 2015.
In 2015, Borelli won his South Shore
City Council seat in an uncontested special election to replace Vincent Ignizio, who vacated his
seat to become CEO of Catholic Charities of Staten
Island.
District 13
Council Member James Vacca is term - limited, leaving the
seat for District 13, which covers Morris Park, Throggs Neck, and
City Island Communities in the Bronx, open to several candidates.
In November, Borelli won an uncontested race for the South Shore
City Council seat recently held by Vincent Ignizio, who left that
seat vacant to run Catholic Charities of Staten
Island.
But that familiar vision of Staten
Island no longer exists on its North Shore, where the borough's first black elected official, Democrat Debi Rose, was voted into a
City Council seat in 2009.
