Extending from that work, we have developed other multimedia case studies
for use with preservice and in - service
teachers.1 This paper is focused on the development of one case involving
issues of team teaching and integrating mathematics and science through a design project, including the following: (a) the development of the case, (b) lessons learned by the

Our members lead the charge
for change by building a movement of forward - thinking
educators through grassroots organizing; identifying, training and supporting
teacher leaders to take on key leadership positions in their schools, districts, states and unions; creating
teacher - led policy recommendations on
issues selected by local
educators; and advocating
for implementation of those ideas through
teacher - driven campaigns.
The Occupy the DOE events reflect
educators» mounting frustrations with education policy and practice that doesn't appear to take their views and expertise into account (see the Report Roundup in this
issue for more on
teachers» increasing job dissatisfaction).
Last year, this series profiled
Educators for Excellence founders Evan Stone and Sydney Morris, who launched
Educators for Excellence in New York City and state to engage
teachers in education policy
issues and provide a platform
for teacher voices to be heard by policymakers and the media — with the ultimate goal of elevating the profession and ensuring that
teacher expertise informs smart education policy choices.
Three practices that can have a positive and dramatic effect in schools are restorative conferences, which are typically used
for more serious
issues; affective statements, which humanize the
teacher and let the student know how his or her behavior has affected that
teacher; and circles, which
educators can use to build community, respond to conflict, or even teach content.
In a joint statement from the state
teacher unions, CTA President Eric Heins called the decision «a good day
for students and
educators,» adding, «it's time to get back to the real
issues facing our public schools and work together to improve student learning and support the art of teaching.»
Future forums will deal with such topics as
teacher quality; communication between
educators and the media; educating
for democratic citizenship;
issues related to the call
for scientifically based research; and living with and educating about our deepest differences.
Written
for teacher educators, higher education administrators, policy makers, and others concerned with
issues of race, the book is comprised of four parts that each represent a distinct perspective on the struggle
for racial justice: contributors reflect on their experiences working as
educators of Color to transform the culture of predominately White institutions, navigating the challenges of whiteness within
teacher education, building transformational bridges within classrooms, and training current and inservice
teachers through concrete models of racial justice.
The idea of charter schools received another boost in November 1988, when the Citizens League, a community policy organization in Minnesota,
issued an influential report Chartered Schools = Choices
for Educators + Quality
for All Students.26 Like Shanker, the committee that authored the report argued that charter schools should be guided by two central tenets: empowering
teachers and promoting diversity.
All in all, this course helped me to understand that it is important
for educators to follow the correct protocol when dealing with situations in and out of the classroom (e.g., speaking with parents or the principal concerning an
issue that they should be aware of), think carefully before choosing an intervention
for a scenario, cooperate with others to achieve a common goal, and know and practice various standards such as diversity, ethics, professionalism, in addition to the role of the
teacher at all times, (Student KNOW1)
Although a number of public education advocates, including myself, have been critical of Weingarten on some
issues, I have tremendous respect
for her and the role she has played in the effort to speak up
for teachers on numerous occasions including this week's decision by Time Magazine to run with a cover bashing the nation's public school
educators.
