We believe that the children who remain in Jackson Public
Schools (
JPS) are every bit as deserving as the children who left
JPS to transfer to an authorized public charter
school.
If you include the children who enrolled at Smilow Prep, 95 percent of students returned to a RePublic
school while no one went back to
JPS.
A 2016 BOTEC study on crime in the city of Jackson and
JPS, however, reported that underfunding means
schools have difficulty implementing PBIS with district - wide fidelity.
The lawsuit also says that with the addition of a third
school charter
school, Smilow Prep, that opened this fall, the amount of money sent to charter
schools by the
JPS could be as much as $ 4 million.
October looms ahead for
JPS, as the Commission on
School Accreditation is set to meet on the 17th and could vote on whether or not to remove the district's accreditation status.
If the Commission votes to remove
JPS» accreditation, students are free to transfer to neighboring
school districts that will take them.
JPS received an «F» grade in the 2016 accountability rankings, and preliminary data from MDE, used against the district during the Commission on
School Accreditation meeting this month, show that the district will receive an «F» in October as well.

JPS is in an «extreme emergency.»
If Bryant chooses to sign the resolution declaring an «extreme emergency» in
JPS, the district will lose local control and access to their
schools immediately.
JPS, on the contrary, has almost 27,000 students by last year's count (enrollment is down, however, and that number is closer to 25,000 - 26,000 this
school year).
If a child leaves
JPS to enroll in a charter
school, the state and federal money follows her, but the local money disappears.
The first half of the
school year hasn't been smooth sailing for
JPS with an audit that resulted in probation, a rejected corrective action plan to get off probation, a failing grade as a district and the abrupt departure of former superintendent Dr. Cedrick Gray.
JPS as a whole is rated «F.» Like the 18 other failing
school districts in the state, it serves mostly black students.
Last year,
JPS was under - funded by about $ 11.5 mil during the last
school year, while the conservative state leaders have continually changed laws and regulations to make it easier to privatize public dollars (i.e. charter, vouchers, tax credits), starting with 3 charter
schools in Jackson.
Until recently, Freddrick Murray was the chief academic officer of high
schools in
JPS.
