Japanese Masterpieces Reunited for First Time in More Than a Century at Wadsworth Atheneum
The festival,
on view until the 2 October, sees myriad
Japanese artists, galleries, bookstores and publishers present a range of work both historical and contemporary.
Recent acquisitions
on view for the first time include works by Washington Color School painter Alma Woodsey Thomas, Italian self - taught
artist Carol Rama and
Japanese - American sculptor Ruth Asawa.
One room contains a handsome Minimal painting from 1969 by William T. Williams, an African - American
artist not often
on view at MoMA; in the same gallery, there's a vivacious geometric configuration by the overlooked
Japanese artist Atsuko Tanaka.
An eight - foot - tall Yayoi Kusama sculpture of a polka - dotted pumpkin is
on view outside the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, in Washington, DC, foreshadowing «Infinity Mirrors,» an exhibition of work by the
Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, set to open in February before touring several North American venues.
