When I started covering manga, in 2005, Tokyopop was trying to do a lot of this, but they couldn't because
the Japanese licensors traditionally didn't want to let you move on to the digital platforms.
In general — this is not specific to Viz — it's my understanding that
Japanese licensors have separate contracts for different territories.
While
Japanese licensors have traditionally put strict limits on manga licenses, region - blocking seems to be going the way of the dodo.
I know it worked well in the music industry, but I'm not really sure on the manga side, especially as this is more on the license,
the Japanese licensor, if they are willing to go with it.

While American
licensors are responsible for a lot of censorship and mismanagement of manga, nitpicking and control - freakish demands from
Japanese publishers - i.e. you can't advertise in this publication because it's too «niche» or because they have ties to a rival publisher, you can't say this in an ad because it's disrespectful, etc. - also make it hard for American publishers to market their wares.
