A common denominator of Christian response» if there can be such a thing» is that guilt
for Jesus» death is the burden of all sinners, but not of one person or group, especially when
Jesus said, «No one takes my
life; I
lay it
down myself» (John 10:18).
He does not mean the feigned affection that sometimes passes
for love in the church, but the genuine article — the kind of love
Jesus has always shown
for his disciples, the kind of love that a mother normally shows
for her children, the kind of love that stands ready to
lay down one's
life for the other.
There's plenty of tension here, and more if we consider Peter's speech in Acts 4, where he seems interested in keeping strays out of the fold («There is salvation in no one else») and 1 John 3:16 - 24, which picks up on the theme of the One who
lays down his
life of his own accord and then sees an outrageous connection between
Jesus» action and our own: «We ought to
lay down our
lives for one another.»

Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, did not put anyone or anything to death, but instead
laid down His
life for the sheep (John 10:11).

Jesus is portrayed as the good shepherd because when the wolf comes he does not flee like a hireling, but because the sheep are his own he

life for his sheep.

Jesus flesh was still struggling through the ordeal but His Spirit was willing... I agree that

for strength and that God will give Him the power to endure... Such as Heb 5:7 says that
Jesus prayer was heard and that God was able to save Him from death meaning

Jesus had the power to

The same Gospel which says, «God so loved the world that he gave his only Son», also puts into the mouth of

life for his friends.»
May I remind us all that
Jesus gave us the example of how we can all adopt this attitude, and translate it into
laying down our
lives for John McArthur, and his detractors?
