It is possible to believe in
Jesus for eternal
life (and of
course, receive eternal
life as a result), but still not be «saved» from many of the temporal and physical consequences of sin, or from sickness, or from enemies, or from many of the other negative things that can happen in
life.
But we maintain, on the contrary, that we know the
Jesus of history very well, even if we do not have a precise and photographic account of his day - by - day activities; and the unique claim of Christianity is that in and by those events in the actual realm of historical happenedness, God is revealed — revealed, of
course, in and under the conditions of history and human
life, but revealed nonetheless.
Of
course the athesit claim no guiding force in there
lives, which is their business, but for the «Christians», they have boldly stated their belief in a person,
Jesus, who would not condone their treatment of atheist.

But I think there is some risk that it might be misconstrued so as to obscure certain truths which I believe to be fundamental: that the Passion is the moment at which that complete oneness with the Father which is the unique and all - pervading characteristic of the
life of
Jesus is paradoxically manifested; that it is at that moment, above all, that
Jesus discloses to us God himself in action; that the judgement passed on
Jesus and the testing brought to bear upon him are a judgement and a testing exercised (of
