While there is definitively some encouragement to use the motion controls on offer here, Arms can truly be experienced anywhere, anytime — with Portable mode support with both
Joycons docked, as well as my preferred control scheme offered for Nintendo's Pro Controller.
Here I thought I was going to prefer using
the joycons docked in the controller, but I actually think I enjoy the motion - controls more.
Not exact matches
The larger SKU will either be the same with a Switch that comes with more storage, or a SKU that include the Pro controller,
Joycon base controller, and a
dock.
Going by retail prices, if you want the
dock as well an extra set of
joycons, that's over half the price of the Switch unit itself.
You can always
dock the
joycons or use a pro controller if you wish, but Nintendo really went all out in ensuring every control option feels so responsive.
I personally have two
docks, two AC adapters, and 5
JoyCon pairs.
The Switch trailer also focuses on a number of control methods already - playing using the
JoyCon controllers with the main unit
docked, then play with each
JoyCon attached to the Switch itself on the go, then various multiplayer options.
The Switch comes with the console itself, the two
Joycon controllers, two
Joycon wrist straps (which attach to the sides of each controller, and also provide larger side buttons), the
dock, the grip, a power adaptor and an HDMI cable.
Other accessories include an arcade stick controller, in - car charger, LAN adapter, carry case,
Joycon controller charging
dock, Switch tablet charging
dock and replacement analogue stick tops and thumb buttons.
Switch owners will be able to use the
JoyCon controllers to play the multiplayer games, and Yooka - Laylee should function both
docked and on the go (I still don't understand why The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can't manage this).
Sliding the tablet - like screen out of the TV
dock and bringing it on the go with
JoyCon controllers attached provides an almost instantaneous transition that is impressive every single time.
And though a charging grip accessory is available, the
JoyCon last about 20 hours by themselves, so unless you don't plan on leaving them in the
docked system while away, you shouldn't need to pick one up yet.
The Switch is a great experience at home,
docked into your TV, but it's just as good with the
Joycons strapped on and taking on the road.
