The curtain rises upon two small kingdoms of
kindred blood and speech, occupying the territory now known as Palestine: the Kingdom of Judah in the south, with its capital at Jerusalem, and the Kingdom of Israel (or of Ephraim) in the
north, with its capital at Samaria.
