Not only is there now a new Checkers centre
with a huge, well - stocked Checkers store, and a Pick n Pay in the town (good news for anyone visiting the
Karoo National Park and needing to stock up), but the historical
Karoo buildings have by and large been restored and looked after, and the town's tourist information office is buzzing.
The small town on Route 62 in the Klein
Karoo is both easily accessible and incredibly beautiful — it's been described as a Victorian village, its streets lined
with Cape Dutch style monuments, surrounded by vineyards, fruit orchards and mountains.
With its starting point in Cape Town, it offers an alternative to the N2 highway to Port Elizabeth, meandering in amongst the wine villages of the
Karoo and exposing one to a wealth of diverse and beautiful landscapes that include rivers, vineyards, orchards and a series of valleys and mountain passes (the alternative name for Route 62 is the Mountain Route) most of them built by Andrew Bain and his son Thomas.
