KF8 files are a kind of Frankenstein monster with an ePub file to load onto newer Kindles and Kindle apps and an old mobi file to load onto older Kindles.

No, these Kindles still read MOBI files without problems, but for advanced formatting features you will need books formatted in the KF8 format.
