H. Richard Niebuhr taught us in The
Kingdom of God in America that the triune themes of the sovereignty of God over the whole world, the reign of Christ in the heart and the expectation of a
Coming Kingdom in and beyond time were all embedded in the term «
kingdom of God,» and that these themes were decisive in the way Christian theology and ethics provided — with differing accents in different periods — a spiritual and moral rudder for American civilization, from its founding
through the industrial era.
The
kingdom of God, whether thought of as that which gradually
comes on earth
through a transformed society or as that which
comes only in God's eternal
kingdom beyond death and earthly history, is always a social concept.

If this is accepted, it follows that the
kingdom does not
come automatically or even supernaturally, but it advances
through the creativity of God as Christ's followers accept their responsibility as God's servants.
The difference lies mainly in the fact that the earlier exponents of the social gospel thought of the
coming of the
kingdom of God as progressive growth toward a better world
through the conquest of these social evils.
