about and who can read between the lines.
Authors who have read my articles, and my
books on

design or watched my speeches or presentations on

design, already
know that I make covers that sell
books, and I'm pretty clear
about that on my website.
I don't
know about you, but the process of
designing a
book cover and then seeing the reality is one of the most satisfying parts of indie publishing.
I
know everything
about the publishing process from writing to editing to proofing to typesetting to
book cover
design to print layouts to eBook coding to
book distribution to marketing and promotion and... WHEW!
This always has mixed results, since people on Facebook don't
know anything
about book cover
design, they probably aren't your target market, they probably aren't ideal readers of your genre, and they aren't designers.
Self - promotion includes the obvious stuff like trying to get people here to buy any product you offer (

book,» and posts advertising for your own publishing services or companies.

about production standards of
design or editorial, and
no longer has to do with professional achievements in other parts of the
book - industry.»
I also helped over a thousand authors publish their
books, and learned just
about everything there is to
know about self - publishing, cover
design and
book marketing.
But, they don't
know anything
about designing a
book cover.
They include business cards to let potential buyers
know how to contact you and place orders; bookmarks to keep a synopsis and the cover
design of your
book in front of readers; postcards to send to hundreds or thousands of potential readers; and publicity flyers to create buzz
about your
book.
Just because they
know something
about publishing doesn't mean they really
know what kind of covers sell
books; and if they can't get their shit together to make a professional and well -
designed website for their own business, they shouldn't be giving you advice on your
book cover.
A lot of small presses have good intentions but actually
know nothing
about book design or
book marketing, which means you're giving them the lion's share of profits but they can't help you sell the
book.
But since
design is important to the eventual success of your
book whether you attempt to do it yourself or hire it out, it pays to
know something
about those conventions and assumptions.
Feedback on mediocre covers won't lead to a better cover, unless you're getting feedback from really brilliant cover designers, who
know a lot
about using
design to sell
books.

know much
about game
design before I read this
book.
I think it was because Okami was originally
designed for the PlayStation 2 and later the Wii, and had a very distinctive art - style that was more
about visually mixing literati themes with comic -
book style outlines and depictions, creating a very distinctive look
no matter what the original resolution was.
