You may want to install an alternative

My son is upset, he just went to read a

Once rooted you are free to install other ebook
readers, I have the kindle
app, Nook
app, FBreader (which has a wide selection of free and paid
books and can handle PDF files with a plug in) and the
Kobo reader, giving me access to a wide gamut of
readers and stores.
Of course, since
Kobo on the PlayBook doesn't play nicely with
books other than its own, you will need an alternative
book reader or the Kindle
app sideloaded on the device.
Open Android 4.2 operating system allows for installing Android
apps from Google Play and offers a wide range of support for reading
apps like Play
Books,
Kobo, Kindle, Moon +
Reader, FBReader, Feedly, Comixology, etc..

Kobo Books App doesn't allow you to add in new content but I don't know if the dedicated
reader is restrictive.
There's cloud - syncing built in if you read
books across devices (in a
Kobo app on a phone, for instance) and the
reader's achievement system is cute, if superfluous.
Kobo does have
apps for Android and iOS, so you can sync
books bought via the
Kobo Store across multiple devices just as you can with the Nook, Kindle, and Sony
Reader.
