With iPad and the launch of all the Android tablet /
readers —
Kobo's Vox, Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet, Sony's Tablet S, and yes, Amazon's Kindle Fire (which may one day at least run an
app that will read ePUB)-- each of the major
eBook retailers has a device that should have no trouble supporting ePUB3.
You won't find Comixology,
Kobo, Nook, Moon +
Reader or thousands of awesome e-reading,
eBook, manga or comic book
apps.
These are then sent through more custom conversion tools which then turn them into high quality EPUB
ebooks that not only look great but work perfectly on any current EPUB eReader, this includes the Apple iPad and iPhone, Android eReader
apps such as Bluefire,
Kobo Reader, Sony
Reader, B&N Nook and BeBook.
The
ebook readers never managed to reach the mark set by Kindle, but
Kobo is definitely trying to make up for it by releasing its very own android ereader
app.
Don't get me wrong, the Nook is a nice
ebook reader and I especially like the GlowLight Nook, but it is fairly limited in functionality unless rooted, which opens it up to install Android
apps, including other ereading
apps like Kindle and
Kobo.
Instead, Amazon and
Kobo both developed Cloud
Readers that allowed customers to easily purchase
ebooks with Safari and then transfer the purchases over to their official reading
apps.
A few weeks ago, after Apple began enforcing the new iOS terms, one
eBook reader,
Kobo, came out and said that they would work on a web
app to bypass the restrictions.
Devices like the Nook Touch and
Kobo ereaders can be hacked to run open Android, but the T68 is one of the first to openly allow third - party
apps to be installed on an E Ink
ebook reader.
The Sony Tablet S will serve as an
eBook Reader for the Sony
Reader app (and Amazon,
Kobo, Barnes and Noble as well as Google Books).
This places Bluefire ahead of both
Kobo and Txtr — two other
reader apps with similar capabilities — since these
apps favour titles bought from their own or their partners»
ebook stores.
Over the coming months,
Kobo will work to integrate the Shelfie platform into its Android and iOS
apps, enabling
readers to add their print libraries to their reading history to generate ever more tailored
eBook recommendations, as well as the option to get digital versions of print titles they already own.
Kobo went on record saying that they would develop an HTML5
app for the Safari web browser to continue to allow customers to shop for
ebooks and other digital content from within the
ebook app, an approach that many
app developers will likely take, but Amazon has beaten everyone to the punch by launching the Kindle Cloud
Reader, what is effectively a huge middle finger to Apple and big thumbs - up to Kindle fans.
In fact I can't think of an
ebook reader or
app that annoys me more than
Kobo's software.
Readmill was a Berlin - based startup that had become popular for the clean, streamlined
ebook reading service it provided; its support for Adobe (s ADBE) DRM meant
readers could buy
ebooks from platforms like
Kobo and Nook (s BKS) and then read them on Readmill's
apps.
In the next few months,
Kobo said it will work to integrate Shelfie's platform into its Android and iOS
apps, enabling
readers to add their print libraries to their digital reading history, and more tailored
ebook recommendations.
Barnes & Noble's NOOK and the
Kobo ereaders are now the only mainstream ePUB
readers, but you can get the Adobe Digital Editions
app for most smartphones and tablets, which will allow you to read
ebooks in the ePUB format.]

It's time to start buying
ebooks from bn.com,
Kobo, or anyone else with an Android
reader app.
Available
eBook formats include mobi (Kindles and Kindle
apps), epub (iThings, Nooks,
Kobo Readers etc.) and PDF.
However, publishers who have
ebooks available through
Kobo, Barnes & Noble or Kindle, all of whom have iPad
apps will be able t sell
ebooks to Irish
readers.
In addition to the
Kobo e-
reader, Borders recently began selling the Aluratek Libre
eBook Reader Pro for $ 119, as well as Borders iPhone and iPad
apps.
Once rooted you are free to install other
ebook readers, I have the kindle
app, Nook
app, FBreader (which has a wide selection of free and paid books and can handle PDF files with a plug in) and the
Kobo reader, giving me access to a wide gamut of
readers and stores.

Kobo, the
eBook reader platform developer and
eBook reading
app provider has been reported to have been purchased for $ 315 million by Rakuten, one of the world's top 3 e-commerce companies by revenue.
Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and
Kobo all offer
apps that allow you to access each
ebook reader's library on an iOS or Android tablet or phone; you can also use a tablet or smartphone to read
ebooks from Apple's iBooks Store (on iOS) and the Google Play Store (on iOS and Android).
For example, you can read Amazon - purchased
ebooks only on Kindle devices or in Amazon's Kindle
apps for other platforms — you can't view them on a Barnes & Noble or
Kobo reader.
Android
ebook readers are more versatile and open than Kindle,
Kobo and Nook ereaders because they can install various Android
apps that cover a lot more ground in terms of ereading, but Android also has the drawback of not running as smoothly or being as optimized as dedicated ereaders.
I'm not looking at it as an
ebook reader, since I already have my PRS - 505, which I adore, and I sometimes use the Kindle, B&N, and
Kobo apps on my iPod Touch.

Kobo app links the
Kobo Store to the
Kobo but you may also use Adobe Digital Editions (in conjunction with the
Kobo app) to transfer
eBooks purchased from Sony
Reader Store, etc. or borrowed from the public library to the
Kobo.
Consider adding your chosen
eBook reader app of choice (like Kindle or
Kobo) to the list.
