Street Fighter especially fits the bill thanks to Mortal Kombat's gore, Smash's strange complexities and what I find to be a less immediately approachable style around Tekken and anime fighters.

The Mortal Kombat franchise may have gone veering wildly into the Woods of Crappiness for a while there but Netherealm finally brought the fighter back onto the right path with Mortal Kombat 9, a blisteringly fun game that I utterly adored.

Changes aren't just coming in the form of how many dimensions you'll have to think in either: the old Mortal Kombat system which saw different punches and kicks mapped to the face buttons has been changed in favour of a more Tekken like system with each attack button controlling one of the fighters limbs which will (hopefully) result in a deeper fighting system than we've seen before, but don't be fooled this is still going to be a return to the original free - form fighting that got it so many followers and resulted in so many frantic fights.

Add in a great story mode with depth plus some really fun online gameplay and Mortal Kombat X for me is one of the best fighters in a long time, especially with those brutal finishing moves which is also the reason this game deserves a much needed R18 + rating.

There's also a plethora of characters in Mortal Kombat X that include classic characters like Sonya Blade and Scorpion to a new generation of fighters like Cassie Cage or Kotal Kahn that really add to the overall mythos of this franchise.

NetherRealm Studios are coming off a high after their well - received 2011 reboot of Mortal Kombat and incredibly fun DC Comics themed fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us.
