Kratos can make
use of light and heavy attacks to take care of the enemy, while he also has a shield with which to parry and counter.
Players get to
use Kratos» new magical axe to cut through an army of trolls and Jörmungandr, level up his rage - fueled abilities, and issue commands to his son Atreus.
The boss fights are out this world and will require strategy and the
use of many of
Kratos» extra abilities such as his rage, which can be activated
using the L3 and R3 buttons once the meter is full.
It may feel like you should be
using the Axe, since axes are generally held to be more deadly than fists, but in truth, you can mess stuff up without ever taking
Kratos's axe off his shoulder.
Kratos can learn special runic moves that are quite powerful and have relatively short cooldown times, so don't be shy about
using them during battle.
Kratos does not
use the Blades of Chaos (GOW1) or the Blades of Athena (GOW2) But the * Blades of Exile *, all of his weapons and style is based off of GOW 3
Pixel counting aside, the huge monsters and gods we are
used to seeing
Kratos face off against in previous titles will have new life breathed into them with all the detail that the game has showcased.
God of War also heavily features puzzles that mostly involve
using Kratos» axe throwing skills.
The game - play is going be substantially different than what fans are
used to, starting with the weaponry:
Kratos isn't getting his Blades of Chaos back (which he lost in GOW3), instead wielding a massive battle axe (Leviathan) which he can throw and have return to him.
For every monster kill that
Kratos does or quests that he completes, he gains experience points that can be
used in leveling up various things to make him strong like teaching him new moves or powering up skills.
Combat-wise,
Kratos is still feisty and deadly when provoked, though
using his Leviathan Axe can take some time to get
used to.
With the different arrows that he can
use, he can stun enemies, deal a huge amount of damage, or even heal
Kratos when need be.
With the decent amount of combos to
use, the game manages to still retain its stylish combos, especially the take downs of
Kratos when the enemy gets stunned.
The Leviathan Axe is something completely different from other weapons that
Kratos has
used and it really changes the flow of combat.
These same weapons that
Kratos and Atreus
use to take down their enemies, they're
using to navigate the world, complete puzzles, and reap rewards.
God of War has always been about combat, with
Kratos slinging around the Blades of Chaos (among others) and
using quick time events for what felt like big, cinematic moments in every battle.
In addition to
using the axe at fending off enemies,
Kratos also
uses it to solve puzzles.

As seen in the screenshot above, everyone's favorite PS3 character (next to
Kratos of course) has been remodeled
using the tools available to the residents of the Dotnia Kingdom.
While the unarmed attack itself is not really anything special, it does have the ability to disarm opponents at times, leaving one of four weapons available for
Kratos to
use temporarily — swords, spears, shields and hammers.
The first two phases will be a complete fist fight where you won't be able to
use the Axe for
Kratos.
As much as I would (hopefully) like to
use Kat to make
Kratos my B word, I'm not too fond of the combat system.
But since you can't earn trophies in new game + and
Kratos is already fully upgraded and powerful, you're better off replaying the game on harder difficulties
using the regular old new game option.
Personally, I love
using the Light Arrows as it raises the stun meter of the enemy, allowing
Kratos to finish enemies with ease.
The game follows
Kratos and his son on a different sort of action adventure experience than GOW fans are
used to.
Kratos can
use this new ability to control the flow of time on various objects in the environments to solve puzzles, and freeze enemies during combat.
As great as battling with the normal Soul Calibur combatants can be, nothing is as satisfying as wreaking havoc on an opponent
using Kratos» Blades of Athena.
Fast forward to 2018, where
Kratos is quite a bit older and not quite as agile as he
used to be.
Finally,
Kratos earns experience from every foe he and Atreus defeats, which is
used to purchase skill upgrades, much like the Red Orbs of the previous games.
- Not sure if this was known, but there's no jump button - Shield is
used to parry and as well in melee combat - Arteus (
Kratos» Son) is an extension of
Kratos moveset, can be
used to attack certain enemies by pushing the square button.
Charged attacks can maim enemies in all kinds of gruesome ways, and stunning monsters allows
Kratos to
use an instant kill move that typically involves an incredible amount of violence.
- While not being directed in combat Aretus will rain arrows on enemies which will increase their stun meter, once they are stunned
Kratos can grab the enemies and either rip them apart or
use them as weapons.
It's one of the many changes that sets this new God of War apart from those of years past, along with a more focused story and more intimate camera angle that will remain close with
Kratos for the vast majority of the game — certainly a lot closer than we are
used to in God of War games.
The PlayStation brand allowed God of War's
Kratos to
use his chained blades against the Soulcalibur roster in the past.
This is advice for his son in desperate need of a worthy role model, a role that the
Kratos we know is wholly unsuitable for, but also guidance for the player; if you loved the way that God of War played in the PS2 and PS3 incarnations of the franchise then this is going to take some getting
used to, but you should take the game for what it is rather than how it's different to what came before.
