the big giant's LED light bulb marketing is just a big hype (known as marketing gimmicks)... the claim of 60w equivalent is just ridiculous and even 2 9w LED bulbs are nowhere near the light intensity of 60w tube light, so these companies shoud be sued for claiming these false margins, i can provide photo comparisons if demanded... plus these led bulbs have a more failure rate as one has already failed on me recently (the expensive philips) even it wasnt used much.

While the switch is a possible culprit, what I'd suspect most is that the wires to the bulb are damaged or corroded, leading to a voltage drop along the wire.

think of it like this: o ----- -LRB-- / +)----- (bulb)------ o where when you connect both leads to a continuous path, the bulb will light.

I think the way he might have meant would be to wire a battery to a bulb with a lead on each end, then when the bulb lights there's continuity.

I'm not sure how much sense this makes but you could disconnect the plug and jump power to positive side of the led to see if the bulb lights up.
