I would say the core of our mission at
LAND came from my
experience working on the 2008 Biennial (with Henriette Huldisch, who is now the senior curator at the List Visual
Arts Center at M.I.T..)
While not technically a residency in the traditional sense, the
Land definitely offers a once - in - a-lifetime
experience and an indication of how the residency model can be transported outside of the
art world's major centers.
The combination of
art and self - sustainability will merge together as the artists live off the
land and
experience how everyday life affects artistic practice.

McMahon explores an abstract language informed by the natural forms and structures that populate the landscape and the history and
experiences that shaped that particular place — from the surrounding fields and undulating hills and ravines to the hidden treasures left behind by the original landowner who made sculptures and
land art.
Thanks to one teacher who made a phone call on my behalf, I managed to
land my work
experience placement at the local
art college and eventually studied there thanks to impressing a design tutor with a drawing of Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 on the Playstation.
Andrea Zittel is also the founder of the adjoining High Desert Test Site, a non-profit organization that supports intimate and immersive
experiences and exchanges between artists, critical thinkers, and general audiences, which is helping to realize
land art project in the California high desert area and beyond.

One of the founders and most prominent practitioners of the «
land art» or «earth
art» movement, Michael Heizer has, since the 1960s, challenged the
art world to escape the confines of the gallery or the museum and inhabit nature itself — and dared viewers to
experience art on a super-human scale.
The first phase also incorporated condition and conservation reports for all works of
art in the collection; an investigation into the current state of the
land; recommendations for recuperating both planted and native grasses and trees; and proposals for protecting the view shed that are essential to the
