Large opencast mines can cover an area of many square kilometres and use very large pieces of equipment, such as draglines, power shovels, large trucks, bucket wheel excavators and conveyors.
As well as works by Anish Kapoor, Richard Long, Pedro Reyes and Santiago Sierra, the gallery is presenting a special display of the four monumental canvases — North, South, East and West — that comprise Liu Xiaodong's Hotan Project series (2012), which were painted in and around the notorious
opencast jade mines and the devastated landscapes of a remote area of China's
largest, most westerly province of Xinjiang.
