In Canada, a few
law libraries offer legal
information services to the general public.
Despite these questionable publishing practices and the diminishing integrity of the products, we —
law librarians and other legal
information professionals — continue to buy them for our
libraries and to promote them to our students and clients.
Here the real issue is the pain that comes with the loss of access to valued sources of legal
information by the legal research community and from the loss of purpose that comes from
law libraries being unable to provide access to legal
information that is the reason for their existence.
Another recent example relates to disappearing Ontario government press releases and backgrounder papers, rightly identified by the then President of the Toronto Association of
Law Libraries in December 2003 as alarming due to its negative impact on legal research and the public's right to access government
information.
This mix of primary (both regulatory and judicial) and secondary (both CLE and commentary) materials is a perfect illustration of what John Palfrey, director of the Harvard

information specialist positions with various job titles to business development groups.
