I think so often metrics in the
law firm
library circle around things like number of reference requests, docketed / billed hours spent, and budget targets; it is good to
learn about alternatives that provide more value for measuring performance.

In sharing a panel session of free Internet legal research with Connie Crosby and two American
law library colleagues, I
learned about and briefly perused Connie Crosby's new book called Effective Blogging for
Libraries available from Neal - Schuman so wanted to mention and celebrate this new title.

More generally, when I study in Osgoode Hall
Law School's
library I sometimes see students beat themselves up when they become frustrated or have difficulty
learning new legal concepts.
But what are the implications for
law firm
libraries, where the
library - as - place is used for research rather than study and
learning and the «community» has a completely different dynamic?

Through partnerships with other public service providers such as public
libraries, Legal Guidance or other pro bono agencies, the
law library will benefit through increased exposure, and SRLs will ultimately benefit by
learning how to access a significant resource that is freely available to them.»
The Canadian Association of
Law Libraries / Association Canadienne de Bibliothèques de Droit has launched upon its first distance
learning initiative, with two more webinars coming up shortly.
Regardless of what brings students into the
law library for late night study sessions, there is one piece of advice I feel applies to all and that is to cherish and soak up every opportunity for growth and
learning.
Being in the
law library at 2:00 a.m. means that this person is willing to study what others have
learned.
