Like the earlier two reports, the Carnegie Report discussed the gap between theory and practice in
legal education, and argued that law schools should strive to provide a more integrated
legal education that will bridge that gap.67 This Report identified clinical and practical
legal training as «weakly developed» in comparison to the «signature pedagogy» of law schools, the case
dialogue method.68 Further, this weakness in practical training is in «striking» contrast with training in other professions, such as medicine and architecture.69
In a 2007 report, Educating Lawyers: Preparation for the Profession of Law (Carnegie Report), the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching reported on a number of gaps in
legal education and set out a series of recommendations for bridging those gaps.2 Among the authors» findings was the «increasingly urgent need to bridge the gap between analytical and practical knowledge...» 3 The resulting recommendation that the teaching of
legal doctrine be integrated beyond «case -
dialogue courses» and into courses that focus on more practical skills acknowledged that this idea was «building on the work already underway in several law schools...» 4 One of the schools where the teaching of
legal analysis has long been integrated into practice - focused courses is the University of Maryland School of Law (Maryland).
Also on the panel are James S. Bolan, a partner with Brecher, Wyner, Simons, Fox & Bolan and a leading authority on
legal ethics and professional responsibility; and Tyson P. Goodridge, founder and principal of the social media
education and consulting firm

33 To function effectively in the case -
dialogue approach, students are often forced to separate their personal sense of fairness and justice from their understanding of
legal rules and principles.34 In other words, exclusive reliance on the case -
dialogue method fragments
legal education.35 Traditional
legal education, therefore, emphasizes the abstract and technical aspect of
legal practice at the expense of a more holistic vision of the attorney as both private advocate and social regulator.36
The inherent tension between whether Flex Time
legal education should be the «same»
legal education delivered in different ways, or an opportunity for innovation in creating distinct forms of
legal education, remains a constructive (and potentially disruptive) aspect of the
dialogue around accessible
legal education.
This study will no doubt trigger a
dialogue about the future direction of
legal education.

legal education generally, is fostering
dialogue between
legal writing teachers and «doctrinal» teachers.
It is understood that on a subject as complex as the functioning of our system of justice and our system of

dialogue on how to move our
legal system forward.
