Another nontraditional way to enter the teaching profession is by teaching in a charter school, which
does not require full
licensure in many states but may require
candidates to go through other hiring and selection processes.71 Teachers of color are better represented in charter schools: 30 percent of all charter school teachers are teachers of color, compared with 18 percent of traditional public school teachers.72
Often, these tests
do not examine a teacher
candidate's ability to teach this content.2 Until recently, teacher
licensure exams were mostly comprised of multiple - choice and a few short answer questions.
The state of Tennessee
does not require teaching
candidates to submit to a fingerprint clearance or background check to obtain
licensure.
Licensure assessments for those entering teaching reflect this uncertainty; virtually all measure some aspects of
candidates» personal content knowledge but few test their knowledge at a standard adequate for teaching it, and even fewer require evidence of performance ability — in part because there is no professional consensus around what a new teacher should be able to
do.
Making adjustments to state teacher
licensure requirements to allow teaching
candidates to demonstrate their competency through rigorous but more authentic performance assessments, such as the edTPA, that
do not have the degree of racial disparity in pass rates that traditional exams have had.
Basic Skills Assessment The Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education
does not require teaching
candidates to complete basic skills assessments for student teaching and / or initial
licensure.
By
doing so, the
candidate can ensure that he or she will pass the VTNE and become eligible for state
licensure or certification as a veterinary technician.
