But this week, we're going to learn about a fourth style of parenting that teaches children the rules of society
like Authoritarian Parenting does, but without the threats of violence; this style, like Indulgent Parenting, hopes to raise happy children, but understands that children must experience discomfort sometimes in order to learn the necessary skills of life.

Some research has shown children growing up with permissive
parents are less likely to respect rules and authority, and
like the second of our four
parenting styles,
authoritarian, teenagers maybe prone to experimenting with alcohol, drugs or risk taking behavior.
Authoritarian parenting styles are usually used when the
parents feel
like they are the bosses, and that their children should obey without question.
Authoritarian parenting is conservative, with a fixed mindset, often in the belief that children should act
like «little adults».
Alternatively,
authoritarian parenting can be detrimental to a child's development and might even contribute to a mental illness
like depression or anxiety.

like dictators, authoritative
parents provide a calm, loving, and consistent presence for their children.
A more controlling or
authoritarian parent may have a tendency to say things
like, «You have to finish everything on your plate» or «No, you may not have seconds, you have eaten enough.»
Scores of teenage boys would rather log countless hours in Internet cafes, exploring the virtual realm of games
like World Of Warcraft, than spend time in the real world, dealing with
authoritarian parents and schoolteachers.
Students with
authoritarian parents —
like students from permissive families — were more likely to reference their peers (Bednar et al 2003).
Unfortunately, the
Authoritarian Parenting Style has some great lessons for kids to learn —
like respecting authority, complying with the directions given to them by safe adults, and having a strong work ethic — but since the only lesson is «do as I say or get spanked» the child isn't learning how or why to respect authority, comply with adult directions, or to develop a strong work ethic.
