With unforgiveable belatedness, I've only recently discovered the work that Gwenn Thomas was doing
in the mid-1990s, a hybrid of painting and photography that resulted
in canvases (or, more accurately,
linens) that were extremely innovative when they were made and surprisingly timely today.

«Of Earth and Sky» includes paintings on
linen canvas and on wood panel — ranging
in size from 54 x 50 inches to as small as 8 x 10 inches — along with a suite of works on paper.
Finally, farthest back, there's a stretched
linen canvas of the same dimensions on which the outlines of the facade are delineated
in pencil.
Then
in the 80s, she diverts away from the traditional
canvas and starts working with acrylic and
linen.
I have
in mind the many artists who cut holes
in canvas or paint likenesses of cotton or
linen weave, as if to say, This is a painted surface on painted painting of a painted surface that is a painting; or the many more good little postmodernists who make art - historical references or paint
in known styles, so the message is something like, This is a nod to other works of art, which tells you that this painting knows it's «a painting»... put me
in a biennial.
Painted patches of
canvas and
linen are applied to the painting surfaces to add a specific element of interest and spontaneity, maintaining energy at peak level with unexpected shifts
in process.

in her studio, subverts that tradition.
Jennings began as a Color Field painter, working on

canvases, I sometimes found that pigment had faded into the material just a bit more than might have been optimal.

in and of themselves until their titles associate them with the experience of light, sound, touch and smell.

linen in which Hedges» approach is a little different than on
canvas, revealing the
linen support and numerous areas where the pigment is applied
in thin brushy strokes to expose the weave and texture.
